Vedic Jyotish Series
This post is a part of effort to introduce Vedic Jyotish in simple terms for general public. Detailed information is available for Members in Explore Vedic Jyotish and Learn Jyotish sections.
In Vedic Jyotish, Bhavas, also known as houses, are divisions of the celestial sky that represent different areas of life and experiences. There are twelve Bhavas in total, each corresponding to specific aspects of existence. These Bhavas are determined based on an individual’s birth chart, known as the Kundli or Horoscope or Chart.
The twelve Bhavs:
- Lagna Bhava (First House): Represents the self, personality, physical body, appearance, and overall life path.
- Dhana Bhava (Second House): Pertains to wealth, possessions, family, speech, and self-worth.
- Sahaj Bhava (Third House): Rules communication, siblings, short travels, courage, and skills.
- Sukha Bhava (Fourth House): Concerns home, family, mother, emotional stability, and ancestral property.
- Dharma Bhava (Fifth House): Governs creativity, children, education, intellect, speculative ventures, and past-life karma.
- Ripu Bhava (Sixth House): Deals with enemies, conflicts, health, service, debts, and daily routines.
- Kalatra Bhava (Seventh House): Relates to marriage, partnerships, relationships, business, and legal matters.
- Ayur Bhava (Eighth House): Associated with longevity, death, inheritance, occult knowledge, transformations, and hidden matters.
- Bhagya Bhava (Ninth House): Concerns higher education, spirituality, luck, beliefs, philosophy, and long-distance travels.
- Karma Bhava (Tenth House): Governs career, reputation, public life, achievements, authority, and responsibilities.
- Labha Bhava (Eleventh House): Pertains to gains, income, friendships, social circles, hopes, and wishes.
- Vyaya Bhava (Twelfth House): Deals with losses, expenses, solitude, foreign travels, spiritual liberation, and confinement.
Each Bhava represents a specific aspect of life, and the planetary placements within these houses in a person’s birth chart are analyzed to provide insights into their experiences, tendencies, and potential life events. The interactions between planets and Bhavas are crucial in understanding various aspects of an individual’s life journey and in making predictions about future outcomes.
