Kundli matching, also known as horoscope matching or guna milan, is indeed a traditional practice in India where the birth charts of prospective partners are analyzed to assess their compatibility for marriage. This practice has been prevalent for centuries and is deeply rooted in Indian culture and tradition.
The process of Kundli matching involves comparing various factors from the birth charts of both individuals, such as their moon signs, ascendants, and the positions of planets like Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. The compatibility is assessed based on these factors, and a score is assigned, indicating the level of compatibility between the prospective couple.
The primary goal of Kundli matching is to ensure harmony and happiness in the marital relationship by identifying potential areas of compatibility and areas of concern. It is believed that a higher compatibility score indicates a greater likelihood of a successful and fulfilling marriage.
There are several benefits attributed to Kundli matching:
Understanding Compatibility: Kundli matching helps individuals and their families understand the compatibility between prospective partners in various aspects of life, including personality, temperament, health, and longevity.

While Kundli matching remains a prevalent practice in India, it’s essential to recognize that its effectiveness and relevance may vary from person to person. In modern times, some individuals may choose to prioritize other factors such as personal compatibility, shared values, and mutual respect in addition to astrological considerations when considering a life partner.
Ultimately, whether or not to rely on Kundli matching is a personal choice, and couples may choose to combine astrological insights with other factors when making decisions about marriage.
As per Vedic astrology the match making system is also called Guna Milaan which means ‘Comparison of Qualities’. In this system there are eight factors each carrying different points. A total points are 36, a score of 18 is considered compatible and a score of 26+ indicates a smooth and happy married life.
Under certain conditions each of these dosha stands cancelled as described below:

Nadi Doshas Cancellation (Max score 8): This gun/koota carries a score of 8 points. If this gun/koota is not matching then it is considered as a Mahadosha (Major defect) and the dosha caused due to its mismatch is considered cancelled if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied.
- Both have same Rashi but different constellations.
- Both have same constellation but different Rashi.
- Both have same birth constellation but different Charans (parts).
- Bhakoot Dosh Cancellation (Max score 7): This gun/koota carries a score of 7 points. If this gun/koota is not matching then it is considered as a Mahadosha (Major defect). However, this dosha is considered cancelled if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied.
- If the Rashi lord and navamsha ascendant lord of both the partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- The Naadi and Gan are matching.
- Gan Dosh Cancellation (Max score 6): This gun/koota carries a score of 6 points. If Gan is not matching then it is considered as a Mahadosha (Major defect) this dosha is however considered cancelled if one or more out of the following conditions are met:
- If the figure obtained on counting the birth Nakshatra (constellation) of the girl from that of the boy is 14 or more.
- If the Rashi lord of both the partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- If the navamsha ascendant lord of both the partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- There is no Bhakoot dosha.
- Both the partners have same Rashi, but different constellation.
- Greh Maitri Doshas Cancellation (Max score 5): This gun/koota carries a score of 5 points. The dosha due to its mismatch stands cancelled if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The navamsha ascendant lord of both partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- If both the partners have different Rashi but they have a common constellation.
- There is no Bhakoot dosha.
- Yoni Doshas Cancellation Yoni (Max score 4): This gun/koota carries a score of 4 points. The Yoni dosha is considered cancelled if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Rashi (Moon sign) lord of both the partners is either a common planet (this happens when both have the same Rashi) or the lords are friend to each other.
- The navamsha ascendant lord of both partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- There is no Bhakootdosha.
- There is at least a score of 1 for the Vashya gun.
- Tara Dosh Cancellation (Max score 3): This gun/koota carries a score of 3 points. If the Tara is not matching is causes a slight dosha. This dosha stands cancelled if one or more out of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Rashi (Moon sign) lord of both the partners is either a common planet (this happens when both have the same Rashi) or the lords are friend to each other.
- The navamsha ascendant lord of both the partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- Vashya Dosha Cancellation (Max score 2): This gun/koota carries a score of 2 points. If the Vaasya is not matching it causes a slight dosha. This dosha stands cancelled if one or more out of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Rashi (Moon sign) lord of both the partners is either a common planet (this happens when both have the same Rashi) or the lords are friend to each other.
- The navamsha ascendant lord of both partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- The Yoni is completely matching.
- Varn Dosh Cancellation (Max score 1): This gun/koota carries a score of 1 point. If the Varna is not matching it causes a slight dosha. This dosha stands cancelled if one or more out of the following conditions are satisfied:
- The Rashi (Moon sign) lord of both the partners is either a common planet (this happens when both have the same Rashi) or the lords are friend to each other
- The navamsha ascendant lord of both partners is either a common planet or mutual friends.
- The Varna of the boy is superior to that of the girl.
