In Vedic Jyotish, Nakshatras are lunar constellations or star clusters that form an integral part of the zodiac system. There are 27 Nakshatras in total, each spanning 13°20′ of the ecliptic. These Nakshatras play a significant role in astrological interpretations and are used to delineate various aspects of life and personality traits. Each Nakshatra is associated with specific qualities, ruling deities, symbolisms, and attributes.

The Twenty seven Nakshatras:

  1. Ashwini (Ashvini) - Ruled by the Ashwini Kumaras (Horse-head twins)
  2. Bharani - Ruled by Yama (the god of death)
  3. Krittika - Ruled by Agni (the god of fire)
  4. Rohini - Ruled by Brahma (the creator)
  5. Mrigashira - Ruled by Soma (the lunar deity)
  6. Ardra - Ruled by Rudra (a form of Shiva)
  7. Punarvasu - Ruled by Aditi (the mother of gods)
  8. Pushya - Ruled by Brihaspati (Jupiter)
  9. Ashlesha - Ruled by Nagas (serpent deities)
  10. Magha - Ruled by Pitris (ancestors)
  11. Purva Phalguni - Ruled by Bhaga (the god of marital bliss and prosperity)
  12. Uttara Phalguni - Ruled by Aryaman (a solar deity)
  13. Hasta - Ruled by Savitar (a solar deity)
  14. Chitra - Ruled by Tvashtar (the celestial architect)
  15. Swati - Ruled by Vayu (the wind god)
  16. Vishakha - Ruled by Indra (the king of gods)
  17. Anuradha - Ruled by Mitra (a solar deity associated with friendship)
  18. Jyeshtha - Ruled by Indra (the king of gods)
  19. Mula - Ruled by Nirriti (the goddess of destruction)
  20. Purva Ashadha - Ruled by Apas (the water deity)
  21. Uttara Ashadha - Ruled by Vishvadevas (the universal gods)
  22. Shravana - Ruled by Vishnu (the preserver)
  23. Dhanishta - Ruled by Vasus (eight elemental gods)
  24. Shatabhisha - Ruled by Varuna (the god of cosmic waters)
  25. Purva Bhadrapada - Ruled by Aja Ekapada (the one-footed goat)
  26. Uttara Bhadrapada - Ruled by Ahirbudhnya (a form of Shiva)
  27. Revati - Ruled by Pushan (the nourishing deity)
Astrologers consider the placement of planets within these Nakshatras in a person’s birth chart to provide insights into their personality, behavior patterns, strengths, weaknesses, and life events. Each Nakshatra brings its unique energies and influences to the interpretation of an individual’s horoscope.
